Reading comprehension
Read the text below carefully and answer the questions that follow it, using your own words as far as possible. As a patient or health care provider, it can be difficult to wade through the various options of medicines available to patients with chronic diseases especially when we must consider that what works for one patient may not work for another. Patients are usually faced with the choice of using modern medicine, traditional medicine or alternative medicine. Modern medicine or standard medical care is practised by a medical doctor or a health care team. They work in synergy with medical laboratories and pharmaceutical companies before prescribing drugs for the treatment of specific diseases. These drugs are sold only in recognised drug stores and pharmacies in which storage facilities are appropriate. However, some people with health problems simply go to roadside vendors and acquire medicine from there. Sometimes out of the need to cut down cost, roadside medicine vendors may sell expired drugs or counterfeit medication to people. Most of the many health complications people face today are the result of improper management of simple health problems. The consumption of roadside medicine is one of such cases. Over decades, serious attention has also been given to traditional medicine. Research has proven that up to 80% of the population rely on traditional medicine for their primary health care needs. African governments are designing policies to encourage research on traditional medicines just as the Chinese have done. It is good that traditional medicine does not interfere with the consumption of conventional medicine. If more research is carried out on this and proven true, things may be better for patients with complicated health situations. This is because the time taken for modern medicine to treat an illness may be seriously reduced as the addition of traditional medicine is likely to enhance effectiveness in treatment. The limitations of modern and traditional medicine have caused patients to opt for alternative medicine. This is the treatment that is used in place of a conventional medical treatment. If your doctor prescribed you a blood pressure medication but you opted instead to overhaul your diet in the hope of reducing your blood pressure, it could be an example of an alternative or natural medicine. Most patients who opt for this method of treatment, are seeking for a more natural approach to healing their diseases. Examples of alternative medicine include: acupuncture, herbal teas, dieting and sports. Regardless of which branch of medicine you ascribe to, you should ensure that any medication, supplements or treatments you are taking are safe. (Culled and adapted from elitelearning.com and Wikipedia) QUESTION 1) What will inspire a patient to choose an option of medicine? (1 mark) 2) State two advantages of modern medicine over traditional medicine. (2 marks) 3) Would you advise your friends to buy drugs at the roadside medicine vendors? Why? (1,5marks) 4) "Over decades, serious attention has also been given to traditional medicine" Justify this statement with two facts from the passage. (2 marks) 5) Why would most patients use both modern and traditional medicine at the same time? (1 mark) 6) What is another name for alternative medicine? (1 mark) 7) If you were a medical doctor, would you recommend your patient to any of the other two branches of medicine? Why? (1.5 marks)
