Reading comprehension

SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 MARKS) Read the following passage and answer the questions below it. Use your own words as much as possible. The man-eating crocodile Babati is a very peaceful village. The people who live there are very friendly to one another and they never quarrel amongst themselves. They help each other in times of need and live happily. All the other neighbouring villages admire them. A great river crosses Babati. It is here that the villagers catch their fish, crayfish, and crabs for food. They make sure that they never pollute the water. They also have a large forest which is a sustainable source for food production, medicines, charcoal and construction materials. They protect their forest by planting trees each time they cut down a tree so that the habitats of animals, birds and other creatures are not destroyed. One day, Layu, a famous fisherman and hunter in the village went out for his normal activities and did not return. Everyone was worried. The villagers wondered whether the people of other villages had caught him and taken him away or whether he had drowned in the river. Some people said that may be he had been eaten by a wild animal. After two weeks, Layu's canoe was found stained with blood and the villagers concluded that Layu had been killed by a dangerous animal in the river. The chief summoned the entire village for a meeting where he instructed them to stay away from the river because it appears that there's a big and dangerous animal in the river. He equally instructed the strongest men in the village to keep guard. After two days, they saw nothing but the chief encouraged them to keep watching. A week later, Pa Fru, his wife and three children had gone to bed when they heard a noise behind the house. Something was moving and everyone in the house was frightened. Then something crawled into the sitting room and into the bedroom. It was a crocodile! Pa Fru's wife and their two daughters hid themselves under the bed. The eldest son, Sama grabbed a pestle and tried to scare away the crocodile but the beast opened its jaws wide to swallow him. Sama jabbed the pestle at the crocodile and the monster snapped its jaws then opened it again. Sama swiftly thrust the pestle deep down its throat and stuck it there. The beast began lashing out. Sama ran out of the house shouting at the top of his voice. Soon the entire village was up. The hunters shot the crocodile. From that day, Sama became the village Hero, he was nicknamed "the crocodile man' and the chief made him one of the most respected sub-chiefs. • (Adapted from ANUCAM Educational Books PLC. 2nd edition, 2012) Questions 1.
