Carefully read the following passage and answer the question that follows. "Artist finds success as entrepreneur". Donna Mae Montgomery always knew she was talented. She wrote her first poem at age eight and has studied and created art ever since. She experimented with photography, ceramics sculpture and painting. Despite this rich background, it was only recently that Donna Mae found a way of using her talents to become an entrepreneur. And idea for a small business was born several years ago during a visit to a museum bookstore where she noticed a pin made of plastic. Today, she creates jewellery from plastic. Her creation includes "Folk Dada" pins that feature richly painted characters drawn in a naïve or surreal style, each with its own story. She also makes a line of jewellery in a more romantic style. "the base of my work is collage, taking different imagery, putting it together, and using the copy machine to print it", says Montgomery designs directly onto the plastic, which is then cut and baked in the oven to make the designs smaller. Montgomery attributes her creativity to a difficult and abusive childhood in New Mexico; she was forbidden to read books, make friends or Learn and explore like other children. In response, she retreated into a private and imaginary world- a world that has strengthened her ever since "I think that's part of my creativity. I had to create my own world in order to survive. Although she suffered from dyslexia, epilepsy, and post- traumatic stress disorder ( a problem that affects those who have endured long periods of intense abuse), Montgomery left home at 17. She worked as a secretary and as a law librarian, but her emotional problems and dyslexia always defeated her in the end. "Eyen though I knew I was intelligent, I would always get fired-either because I couldn't spell or 'because I couldn't handle things emotionally. She struggled on and off for years, working part-time while taking art classes to feed her creative passions. At 48, Montgomery started experimenting with with plastic- plastic- finding it both a cheap and an exciting creative medium- while taking a class at fort Mason Arts Centre. She started selling a few of her photocopy-inspired pieces in small stores and received an excellent response. Realising that she had the potential for a business, Montgomery joined Sam Francisco's Initiative for self employment's "Women Mean Business Project". She says, it's like a dream come true for someone like myself! Montgomery completed a business-planning course and went on to work with a project consultant to develop her own business plan. The response to her work has been extremely positive and Montgomery is excited about the future. For Montgomery who has always struggled to get by in the conventional work world, self- employment is the natural choice.
