10 ptsSECTION C: READING
Reading comprehension
SECTION C: READING (10m) Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow correctly. Life in Africa and Cameroon in particular is generally changing. The once celebrated values of African hospitality, generosity, solidarity and communalism are gradually disappearing, giving way to a more individualistic way of life. Many are those who live communities, neighbourhoods, but far from them. It is becoming very fashionable to build houses with fences higher than the main house. Reaching out to people or coming together to carry out charitable tasks for the good of all is becoming a major problem in our towns, cities and villages. Youths are more concerned with indoor activities like watching movies and television series or playing video games than organising themselves to help their communities. Adults spend hours on their android phones, tablets, laptops and bars, whereas the rewards of getting communally involve are enormous. Getting involved in community activities like mending neighbourhood plank bridges, cleaning the drainage system or gutters, helping the old and disabled, involvement in clean up campaigns, trees and flowers planting campaigns or just helping a neighbour to move furniture will enable teenagers come in contact with like -minded peers and positive adults role models other than their parents. By interacting and cooperating with adults or young people of their age, teenagers see the world in different ways. Moreover, community activities give teenagers the opportunity to apply the skills they have already acquired. Such skills like singing, cooking, drawing and painting can boost a teenager's esteem, personality, character or identity if he or she is well appreciated or finds his or herself in a supportive environment. Through this, the young man or woman may start marking out his or her course in life. They can also begin to see themselves as helpful, important, generous or simply good persons. Community activities help teenagers not only to demonstrate what they know but to acquire and develop new skills. Generally, involving in community activities enables young people to learn and deal with challenges in life. They also learn to relate and communicate with different people, there by building life skills and abilities. Going along with different people or succeeding in fitting well in a group boosts teenagers' mental health, self confidence and well-being. It is no secret that being strong mentally is the gateway to success. Furthermore, involving in community activities helps youngsters to manage their free time properly. By balancing leisure, work and study, the child learns to be organised. Being occupied in outreach activities for the good of the community or group is more rewarding than idling about. The thought that group members expect you to turn up and part in one benevolent activity or the other gives positive feelings that can liberate young people from sadness, stress and depression. Above all, it will keep them off criminal activities. An idle mind being the devil's workshop, as the saying goes. Young people are encouraged to get involved in community activities like transporting stones and sand for the construction of schools, hospitals, churches, mosques and libraries in their communities. They should take activities like part in the roofing or panting of an orphanage, contribute in planting trees and flowers in the streets of their village, town or city or take good dish to the poor and needy of their community. In a group of three, ten or a class, they should show love and take it as a moral or civic responsibility to serve their community. We are a family, a big community family and family-community, and as the American president J. F. Kennedy said, “say what you have done for your country and not what your country has done for you”. Youths should be active participants paying attention to the welfare of the family-community, environment and country.
