SECTION C: Reading comprehension (10marks). Read the passage below and keenly answer the questions in a well organized language THE TRIAL A disabled man named Ndamba was accused of stealing a bag of rice from Mr Che's store. He was summoned before the Bamenda court of first instance to defend himself. On the set day for hearing, people filled the courtroom to listen to what the whole town considered as a controversial case, for they could not imagine how a disabled person could steal. Both parties for the case were present: the petitioner, the prosecutor and the respondent. When everybody was seated, the court registrar announced the entrance of the presiding Magistrate Court rise for Judge, she shouted. When the judge has taken his seat, she ordered the court to be seated once more. The judge asked the registrar to read the case(s) set for hearing on that day. The registrar then called out, "Case N° CFI/OS/DF between the state and Mr Che as petitioner versus Mr Ndamba as the respondent”. “I swear by the Almighty God that the evidence I shall give in this case, shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth". After his charge accusing him of having stolen a bag of rice from Mr Che on the 4th may 2008 at the Bamenda Food Market, the respondent pleaded “Not guilty my Lord". The prosecutor then read out the facts of the case and stated the provisions of the applicable law. The counsel for the respondent examined and cross-examined the petitioner. The respondent was equally examined and cross-examined by the prosecutor in order to establish his guilt. The presiding judge came in looking at the evidence addressed. “I find the respondent not guilty. And to compensate the respondent for false accusation, I now invite you to take home the bag of rice which has been used as evidence against you" The disabled man then lifted the bag of rice up and with the aid of one of his legs threw the bag of rice on his neck. "Wait Mr Ndamba, you said a while ago to the court that you couldn't have stolen the bag of rice because of your disability and now you have carried it with relative ease". The court burst into feats of laughter as the presiding judge was questioning the man. Because the final decision to discharge and acquit the case had not been taken, the presiding judge broke in at last. “You are then sentenced to one month imprisonment with hard labour and a fine of 200 thousand francs (100 thousand francs for the legal department and 100 thousand francs as damages to the civil party (petitioner) as per section 318(1)a of the Cameroon penal code".
