In every country in the world, more than thirty percent of the total population is engaged in some kind of trade. This shows that trade is a very important occupation. Without trade, people would not be able to have what they need. A farmer for example who produces yams is able to have clothes thanks to trade. In our country, people are engaged in all level of trade. There are people doing retail trade which is the most popular and easy form of trade. Every single street has several retail stores with salesmen and women. There are also wholesale shops, mostly in large towns like Douala, Yaounde, Bafoussam, Bamenda, Garoua, Kumba and Limbe. There are other traders in our country who import goods and raw materials or export Cameroonian products abroad. All these people are directly engaged in buying and selling. They can't do their work successfully without the services of the many men and women who operate railway, trucks lines, warehouses, banks, insurance companies and communication services. Retailers and wholesalers are merchants or dealers who because they serve a limited geographical area are said to be engaged in internal or domestic trade. They employ salesmen and saleswomen who assist them in marketing. In addition to buying and selling, they do advertising and stock control. The retailer is the manager of a department store or grocery. Retailers obtain their goods in bulk from wholesalers or distributors. These merchants in turn obtain their goods from manufacturers and processors. Merchants dealing with foreign markets are called importers and exporters. These dealers end up the range of trade to all parts of the world. Because of differences of climate, natural resources, technical skills and labour cost, nations of the world are forced to have a kind of division of labour, whereby a country produces only what she can produce at the cheapest possible cost. This is the bases for international trade. Cameroon for example produces coffee and cocoa because her climate is suitable for the production of these products.
